How to Play 2048
2048 is a simple number puzzle game that anyone can learn in minutes but takes real skill to master. This guide will teach you everything you need to know — from basic controls to understanding how scoring works.
The Objective
The goal of 2048 is to slide numbered tiles on a 4×4 grid, combining tiles with the same value to create increasingly larger numbers. You win when you create a tile with the value 2048. However, you can continue playing to achieve even higher scores.
Controls
Desktop
- Arrow Keys (↑ ↓ ← →) — Slide tiles up, down, left, or right
- WASD Keys — Alternative controls: W (up), A (left), S (down), D (right)
Mobile & Tablet
- Swipe Up — Slide tiles upward
- Swipe Down — Slide tiles downward
- Swipe Left — Slide tiles to the left
- Swipe Right — Slide tiles to the right
Rules of 2048
- All tiles move together: When you press a direction, every tile on the board slides in that direction until it hits a wall or another tile.
- Matching tiles merge: If two tiles with the same number collide while moving, they merge into one tile worth their combined value. For example, two 4-tiles merge into an 8-tile.
- One merge per move:A tile that has already been created by a merge cannot merge again in the same move. For example, if two 2's merge into a 4, that new 4 cannot merge with another 4 in the same move.
- New tile each turn: After every move, a new tile appears in a random empty cell. New tiles are either a 2 (90% chance) or a 4 (10% chance).
- Game over: The game ends when the board is full and no more merges are possible in any direction.
How Scoring Works
Your score increases every time tiles merge. The points you earn equal the value of the newly created tile. For example:
- Merging two 2s → Creates a 4, earns 4 points
- Merging two 4s → Creates an 8, earns 8 points
- Merging two 64s → Creates a 128, earns 128 points
- Merging two 1024s → Creates the 2048 tile, earns 2048 points
Your best score is saved automatically in your browser so you can always try to beat your personal record.
Understanding Tile Values
Tiles in 2048 follow a simple pattern — each tile value is double the previous one:
2 → 4 → 8 → 16 → 32 → 64 → 128 → 256 → 512 → 1024 → 2048
Since each tile is created by merging two tiles of the previous value, reaching 2048 requires 11 merges starting from 2. This means you need at least 11 separate 2-value tiles to create a single 2048 tile (in the ideal scenario with no 4-value spawns).
